Oklahoma is a state located in the southern United States. The name Oklahoma comes from the Choctow Indian phrase okla humma, which means "land of the Indians". Similar to the English word "Indian", "Okla humma" also refers to the Indians in general. Oklahoma was adopted as the de facto name for the Oklahoma Territory in 1890, two years after the territory was opened to white settlement.

Between 850 and 1450 AD, the area's first permanent people are thought to have arrived. Spanish explorers explored the area in the early to mid-1500s, but it was claimed by French explorers in the 1700s. French sovereignty of Oklahoma continued until 1803 when the United States completed the Louisiana Purchase, acquiring all of France's territory west of the Mississippi River.
