Who is Aretha Franklin?

Aretha Franklin is an American singer, songwriter, and civil rights, activist. More than 75 million copies of her albums have been sold. Franklin was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005 for "helping to shape our Nation's creative and cultural legacy." Today, many see her as the "Queen of the Soul."

Where did Aretha Franklin come from?

Though born in Memphis, Tennessee, Aretha Franklin spent most of her early life in Detroit, Michigan, with her mother, a gospel singer, and her father, a Baptist minister. After her parents separated, Franklin stayed with her father in Detroit. She relocated to New York City in 1960 to seek a career in secular music.

How did Aretha Franklin begin her musical career?

Aretha Franklin is an artist of color who grew up in a family whose father was a church preacher and choir leader. Thanks to the help of her father Clarence LaVaughn Franklin, at the age of 10, little Aretha Franklin became a choir member and quickly became famous for her natural musical talent.

In 1956, the female singer recorded her first song and signed a contract with JVB Records. From there, this outstanding vocalist became known as a gospel singer with her debut album Songs of faith. By the age of 18, Aretha Franklin turned to secular music. Mr. Clarence LaVaughn Franklin became his daughter's manager. At JVB Records, this great artist's musical talent has not really had a chance to shine, that's why she stopped renewing her contract, moving to a larger record label, Columbia Records. From here, Aretha Franklin's musical career officially had its first flourishing steps.

After listening to the young singer's demo, John Hammond of Columbia Records decided that Aretha Franklin would be a great future artist. In September 1960, the label released the 18-year-old rookie's first record, Today I sing the blues. The song quickly entered the top 10 of Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. Four months later, Aretha Franklin released her first album called Aretha. She then released the hit Won't Be Long, which peaked at number 7 on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and number 76 on the Billboard Hot 100. Also in 1961, the singer released two more singles. is Operation heartbreak and Rock-a-bye your baby? Both of these "brainchildren" achieved excellent rankings on prestigious charts, taking Aretha Franklin's name to new heights.

From 1962 to 1966, this talented superstar did not have an album or single that reached the top 10 of the music charts. However, she was praised by critics. In 1964, DJ Pervis Spann in Chicago called Aretha Franklin "the new queen of soul music". This name comes just two years after this new vocalist released his debut album.

Unique Soul Music Queen

After releasing Cry like a baby, her final single with Columbia, in 1967 she joined the new label Atlantic Records and enjoyed her first major commercial success. Also during the time of cooperation with this label, from the title "new queen of soul music", Aretha Franklin was honored by the American public with a more noble title than "the queen of soul music".

During the time working with the above record label, Aretha Franklin's music products have achieved outstanding success. Not only receiving a warm response from the audience, the new star constantly received positive reviews from the most prestigious music critics. In the first year of joining Atlantic Records, the album "I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You" of this black voice reached the runner-up position on the Billboard 200. This is considered a spectacular new beginning for the female singer. The album is also the first product to claim the crown on Hot R&B/Hip-hop Albums, a prelude to their consecutive victories. Aretha Franklin.

Only 13 years after joining the new company, Aretha Franklin has won 10 prestigious Grammy Awards in her music career. This was the peak of this diverse vocalist. In the following years, from 1969 to 1975, the female singer continuously won 6 Grammy Awards in the category of Best Female R&B Performance with immortal works: Chain of fools, Share your love with me, Don’t play that song for me, Bridge over troubled water… In 1974, Aretha Franklin also won the Grammy Award in the category of Best Gospel Performance with the album The Amazing Grace.

Years of ups and downs and a sad departure

After consecutive years of standing at the peak of fame and peaking in music, Aretha Franklin's career gradually declined and ended her contract with Atlantic Records. This period became difficult for the singer Respect when she did not find her path, did not know how to balance her personal life and career. In addition, the female singer was entangled in financial frauds and tax evasion, leading to many legal troubles as well as a personal money crisis. Also during this period, her father had a serious accident that resulted in a coma.

The low notes of Aretha Franklin's life began to fade and disappear as this powerful voice revived with the Sparkle soundtrack. Soon after, her song Something he can feel topped the R&B charts. Subsequent albums like Sweet Passion or La Diva helped the star born in 1942 regain the inherent peak form of an artist who is always worshiped like a queen.

In the early 1990s, when the American audience's musical taste was no longer R&B or disco but turned to pop music. During this period, solo singers also gradually became more inferior, giving way to the male/female band model to take the throne. During the decline of the old, audiences around the world still see Aretha Franklin steadily producing music, passionate and burning on stages big and small everywhere in the world.

Besides keeping her passion and unwavering love for her music, Aretha Franklin also demonstrated herself as an up-to-date vocalist when she released her album Aretha Franklin sings the great diva classics in 2014. At the time, Aretha Franklin received a lot of respect from powerful figures, including Barack Obama. The female singer performed the classic song America' my country this of thee at the inauguration of the US president in 2009. In 2015, during the music night honoring herself, Aretha Franklin performed the song (You) make me feel like) a natural woman. The excellent performance of the female singer made the head of the White House at that time shed tears while enjoying it.

Aretha Franklin died of terminal pancreatic cancer on August 16, 2018, in Detroit, Michigan.

Former US President Barack Obama and his wife also expressed their condolences and great admiration for the female singer. “In Aretha Franklin's voice, we can feel history, strength, pain, darkness, and light, and reverence for the singer. She helped us feel more connected, more hopeful, and more human," Barack Obama shared before announcing the death of his beloved artist.

From now on, the world's musical heritage has lost a great talent, and the music-loving audience has lost an immortal monument. But the departure of Aretha Franklin did not prevent her name from living forever in the hearts of the music-loving public and did not prevent this female singer's immortal songs from living forever.
