Armenian country and people and things to know

Armenia, officially the Republic of Armenia, is a landlocked mountainous country in the southern Caucasus. It is bordered by Turkey to the west, Georgia to the north, Azerbaijan to the east, and Iran and the Azerbaijani enclave of Nakhchivan to the south. A former Soviet republic, Armenia is one of the oldest countries in the world and is believed to be where Noah and his descendants first settled.

Although Armenia is constitutionally a non-religious state, Christianity plays an important role both in the history and identity of the Armenian people.

Armenia is currently a member of the United Nations, the Council of Europe, and the Commonwealth of Independent States, and an observer of the Eurasian Economic Community. The country is an emerging democracy and because of its strategic location, Armenia is both within the sphere of influence of Russia and the United States.

What is the origin of the name Armenia?

The original Armenian name was Hayq, later Hayastan. Hayasa, attached to the Persian suffix '-stan' (land). Haik was one of the outstanding Armenian leaders and the name Land of Haik was named after him.

According to legend, Haik was the little brother of Noah (the son of Togarmah, who was the son of Gomer, who was the son of Japheth, who was the son of Noah), and according to ancient Armenian tradition, an ancestor of all Armenians. He is also said to have settled beneath the foothills of Mount Ararat, participated in the construction of the Tower of Babel, and, upon his return, defeated the Babylonian king Bel (referred to by some researchers as Nimrod). August 11, 2492 BC near Lake Van Mountain, in historical southern Armenia (now in Turkey).

Hayq was known to the surrounding countries like Armenia, perhaps it was once the name of the most powerful tribe living in the old lands of Armenia, who called themselves Armens and were of Indo-European origin. It is traditionally derived from the word Armenak or Aram (great-grandson of Haik's great-grandson, and another leader, who according to Armenian tradition is the ancestor of all Armenians).

According to certain Jewish and Christian academics, the word 'Armenia' derives from Har-Minni, which translates as 'Mount Minni' (or Mannai). Pro-Christian arguments hold that Nairi, meaning land of rivers, was an ancient name for the country's mountains, first used by the Assyrians around 1200 BC; while the first known written record, the Armenian, is the Behistun Inscription in Iran, dating from 521 BC.

What is Armenian culture like?

Armenians have a distinct and unique alphabet and language. The letters were created by Mesrob Mashdots and consist of 36 letters. 96% of the population in the country speak Armenian, although 75.8% of the population also speak other languages such as Russian as a result of the Soviet policy of popularizing Russian. The adult literacy rate in Armenia is 99%. Most adults in Yerevan can speak Russian, although English is also growing in popularity.

Armenian hospitality is legendary and rooted in ancient tradition. Social gatherings take place around dining tables with a variety of sumptuous, elaborately prepared seasonal foods served one after the other (but not spicy). Hosts often put food on guests' plates whenever it's empty or refills cups when they're running low.

After one or two offers, a polite refusal or, more simply, leaving a small piece of food, is acceptable. Alcohols such as cognac, vodka, and red wine are often used at parties and gatherings. Rarely or never does a guest enter an Armenian home without being offered coffee, cake, food, or even water.

Weddings are usually quite elaborate and regal. The wedding process begins when a man and a woman "betroth". Elders on the male side (parents, grandparents, and often aunts and uncles) go to the woman's house to ask her father's permission for the relationship to continue and hope for a bright future. When the girl's father gave her permission, the man gave the woman a "betrothal ring" to formalize the work.

To celebrate the two families' consensus, the woman's family opened a bottle of Armenian cognac. After being betrothed, most families hold a rather large betrothal party. The girl's family is the party that arranges, organizes, and pays the expenses. Male families rarely participate in this. During the party, a priest was invited to pray and bless them.

When the prayers were over, the couple wrapped the wedding bands on each other's right hands (the rings were removed from the right hand when the official marriage ceremony was held by the Armenian church). The usual waiting period for the official wedding ceremony is one year. Unlike in other cultures, the man and his family do not have to pay the cost of the ceremony. The process of planning and organizing is usually done by the bride's family, the groom just needs to be present.

The National Art Gallery in Yerevan has more than 16,000 works dating back to the Middle Ages. It also houses many works of European masters. The Museum of Modern Art, the Children's Gallery, and the Martiros Saryan Museum are just a few of the many valuable art collections on display in Yerevan. Furthermore, many private galleries are also operating, many more opening every year. It often holds exhibitions and sells paintings.

The Armenian Symphony Orchestra of an international level often performs at the beautifully restored Municipal Theater. In addition, many other performance groups are also highly appreciated for their musicianship, such as the Armenian National Symphony Theater and the Serenade Symphony Orchestra. Classical music is performed in many smaller chambers, including the National School of Music and the Symphony Hall. Jazz music is quite popular, especially in the summer when live performances are often held at many outdoor cafes in the city.

The Vernisage at Yerevan (arts and crafts market), near Republic Square, is always bustling with hundreds of vendors selling handcrafted items, many of which are truly ingenious, on weekends and Wednesdays. It sells woodcarvings, antiques, lace, and hand-woven tapestries, and the kilim is a Caucasian specialty.

Obsidian stone, available locally, is inlaid into many ornaments and jewelry. Armenian goldsmiths have a long and distinct tradition, a separate section of the market dedicated to gold collections. Soviet-era memorabilia and recent Russian-made souvenirs such as materiosca (wooden dolls) watches, enamel boxes and more, are also present at the Vernisage.

The American University of Armenia offers a wide range of courses in Business and Law. This university was established through the efforts of both the US Government, the Armenian Philanthropic Union, USAID, and the Boalt School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley.
