What country is Azerbaijan?

Located in the majestic Caucasus Mountains, the country of Azerbaijan hides great natural beauty, including primitive glaciers with canyons and lakes, which is an ideal development environment for rich and diverse flora and fauna.

The first destination you should visit when coming to Azerbaijan is the capital Baku, the largest, most beautiful, and most famous city of this country. Baku is like a "new Dubai" on the Caspian coast. The name "Baku" in the local language means "the city of the wind" which reflects the outstanding characteristics of this city. With wide boulevards, giant buildings, Baku attracts visitors with its unique architecture, ancient pristine villages located around the city.

This city is located on the border of Asia but has a European architectural style. Due to the history of being ruled by different empires, today, in Baku, there are still architectural works of Arab, Persian, Ottoman, and Oriental styles.

History of the country Azerbaijan

According to rewritten history: The earliest settlers in present-day Azerbaijan were Caucasian Albanians – a people who spoke the Caucasian language. And along with that, Azerbaijan was once inhabited by many tribes, including Persians, Armenians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Turks, Mongols, and Russians. Accordingly, the Turkic language that existed in the region of Azerbaijan in the 11th century is known as a result of the migration of the Turks here.

The name of the kingdom first established in Azerbaijan was Mannae in the 9th century BC.

According to recorded history, this kingdom lasted until 616 BC and by 549 BC became part of the Persian Empire. The Caucasian territory of Albania was founded in the 4th century BC and consisted of the territories of what is now the state of Azerbaijan.

Islam rapidly developed in Azerbaijan following the Arab conquests in the seventh and eighth centuries. After the power of the Arab Khalifate declined, many semi-independent states were established, the kingdom of Shirvanshah being one of them. In the 11th century, the conquering Seljuk Turks became a powerful force in the Caucasus and led to the establishment of temporary Azerbaijanis according to the language. In the 13th and 14th centuries, the country suffered from Mongol-Tatar invasions.

After the Safavid dynasty, Azerbaijan experienced a brief period of feudal division between the 18th and early 19th centuries and consisted of independent kingdoms under khans. After two wars between the Iranian Empire of Qajar, as well as Ganja, Guba, Baku, and other independent Khanate kingdoms, and the Russian Empire, the Caucasus was occupied by the Russians under the Treaty of Gulistan of 1813, and the Treaty of Turkmenchay of 1828. , and many other earlier treaties between the Russian tsars and the Khans during the first decade of the 19th century. In 1873, oil was found in the city of Baku, the future capital of Azerbaijan. By the early 20th century almost half of the world's oil supply came from Azerbaijan.

After the collapse of the Russian Empire in World War I, Azerbaijan joined Armenia and Georgia as part of the short-lived Transcaucasian Federal Democratic Republic. When the republic was dissolved in May 1918, Azerbaijan declared its independence as the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic. The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was the world's first parliamentary Islamic republic and lasted only for two years, from 1918 to 1920, when Soviet Red Army forces invaded Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan, along with Armenia and Georgia, became a component of the newly established Soviet Union's Transcaucasian SFSR in March 1922. In 1936, the TSFSR was dissolved and Azerbaijan became a republic of the Soviet Union with the name Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic.

In 1990, the Azerbaijanis gathered forces to oppose Soviet control and promote independence. The protests were brutally suppressed by Soviet intervention in what they now call Black January. In 1991, Azerbaijan re-established its independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The early years of independence were overshadowed by a war with Armenia and the Armenian separatists to the Nagorno-Karabakh region. Despite a ceasefire in 1994, Azerbaijan has yet to resolve this conflict with Armenia. Since the war ended, Azerbaijan has lost control of 14% of its territory including Nagorno-Karabakh. Because of this conflict, both countries have to deal with refugee problems and displacement within the country as well as economic difficulties.
