What Is National Twin Day?

National Twins Days is an annual event held in Twinsburg, Ohio, on the first full weekend in August to honor biological twins (and other multiples, e.g. triplets, quads).

Since 1976, when the festival was formed by a group of Twinsburg residents based on a plan conceived by Ray Diersing, Sage Hiller, and Ari Hiller, the event has taken place every summer. National Twins Day was initially offered to the municipal council and was rejected since it was deemed to be a horrible concept.

It is the world's largest yearly meeting of twins, attracting thousands of people from all across the United States and the rest of the world.

We've also been captivated by twins throughout the years. Literature enthusiastically embraced the double duplicity. Take, for example, the conflict between Sebastian and Viola in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. Even today's sitcoms make us cry when twins are shown. Friends' Phoebe Buffay and, more subsequently, The Big Bang Theory's Sheldon Cooper comically presented their twin lifestyles.

Real-life twins, on the other hand, fascinate us. We always pay notice when twins move into the White House, as we did with Barbara and Jenna Bush in 2001. Of course, we feel like they're family when they play mystical characters as James and Oliver Phelps did in the Harry Potter books. We kept going back for more of their performances as Fred and George Weasley.

Some twins share similar hobbies. Mark and Scott Kelly, for example, both became astronauts and have made significant contributions to both space exploration and scientific research. Twins The passion of hockey brought Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson and Monique Lamoureux together on the US Olympic Hockey Team.

There's a lot more than DNA that twins have in common. Many of them don't even have the same appearance. One thing is certain: they both celebrate National Twin Day.

National Twins Day History

Moses and Aaron Wilcox, two industrious 19th-century twins, were the inspiration for the National Twins Days celebration. "They were the identical twins who acquired around 4,000 acres of property here in 1819 and then volunteered to contribute six acres for a town square and $20 for a new school on one condition: that the town is renamed Twinsburg instead of Millersville."

In 1976, the community was celebrating the bicentennial of the United States, and they decided to host a celebration that the Wilcoxes would have enjoyed. Although just 36 pairs of twins attended, the citizens of Twinsburg realized its potential and decided to make it an annual event.

When is National Twins Day?

While the "day" is designated National Twins Day, it is actually a weekend-long celebration.

National Twins Day is observed on the first full weekend of August, which coincides with the first Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of the month.

This indicates that National Twins Day will be celebrated on August 7, 8, and 9 in 2020.
