Cicadas 'invade' the US after 17 years of hibernation

Trillions of Brood X cicadas are shedding their exoskeletons in many states, ending a 17-year hibernation.

The re-emergence of cicada populations has been delayed by longer-than-normal cold weather, as the noisy insect only emerges from the ground when the soil is at 17.8 degrees Celsius. Washington, D.C., and Alexandria are escaping the shell that protects them during hibernation.

The cicada's body will quickly harden and turn dark like its familiar shape before they fly off to find a mate. In the process, they emit a cry of up to 100 decibels, as loud as the sound of a jet plane taking off. Brood X cicadas are characterized by orange stripes along with the body and orange patches between the eyes.

There are 15 strains of large cicadas in different geographical areas, with a life cycle of 13 - 17 years. They emerge from the ground in flocks, with some years recording trillions appearing in a season. Most cicadas are distributed in the eastern and central United States. This year, Brood X will be available in Connecticut, Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington D.C. This is a large strain that appeared massively in the spring and early summer of 2004. Some Brood X cicadas were present in Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, where temperatures are warmer. The next mass emergence of cicadas is in 2024, including strains Brood XIII (17-year cycle) and Brood XIX (13-year cycle).

Cold temperatures don't kill cicadas but signal them that it's not time to leave their underground habitat. As the temperature drops, they burrow deeper into the tunnel. Cicadas are relatively harmless but can be a nuisance like hitting windshields and leaving their peeled carcasses everywhere.

Cicadas have the ability to harden their exoskeleton for about 5 days, shedding them to fly away. Male cicadas make calls to attract a mate. After a successful pairing, they mate and the female lays eggs on the tree. The pupae then fall to the ground and burrow to begin hibernation.

What exactly is a cicada, and Brood X?

Cicadas are insects belonging to the Hemiptera order (true bugs). Their primary source of nutrition is plant matter, which they consume both below and above ground.

Brood X (X is 10 in Roman numerals) is the oldest and biggest cicada, having lived for 17 years. This brood may be found in three separate regions, all of which are focused around Pennsylvania and northern Virginia, Indiana, and eastern Tennessee, respectively. The most prominent manifestation of Brood X as an adult occurs just once every 17 years.

Periodic cicadas are found in seven different species, one of which has only recently been discovered. In the Washington, DC region, there are three different species. The cicadas (which have a green hue) are another type of insect that appears every year.

How do they affect the environment?

Because the female cicadas deposit their eggs on the limbs of young trees, large numbers of cicadas that emerge on a regular basis can be detrimental to young plants. Planting tiny trees in the spring of 2021 is not a wise decision. This year, planting trees in the fall is an excellent time to do it, or spring seedlings can be covered with netting.

Cicadas are consumed by a wide variety of creatures, including frogs, fish, raccoons, and birds, and the arrival of X's parents is a huge celebration for the entire kingdom. Several studies have revealed that some birds lay bigger clutches of eggs during the years when cicadas arrive on the scene. In addition to fertilizing the soil around the trees where their pupae will eat and grow, adult cicadas die shortly after mating.

Instructions for wearing fabric masks properly

Step 1: Determine the correct wearing direction of the mask

Usually, an antibacterial fabric mask will be designed so that the surface is facing downwards to limit the possibility that droplets will stick to the fabric.

Step 2: Wear a mask that covers from the bridge of the nose to the entire chin area

After determining the correct wearing direction, you start wearing the mask. You need to perform operations so that the mask can squeeze close to the bridge of the nose and cover the entire chin.

Instructions for washing and storing antibacterial fabric masks properly

With antibacterial fabric masks, you should wash them gently by hand. Do not put the mask in the washing machine. You can use scented soap or antibacterial hand sanitizer to clean the mask.

Never use hot water

You should note not to soak the mask for a long time in hot water because the fabric will expand for a long time, causing antibacterial chemicals to escape from the fiber structure, losing the antibacterial feature of the fabric mask.

Dry the mask immediately after washing

You should dry the mask in the shade, avoid exposing the antibacterial fabric mask to direct sunlight. UV rays from sunlight can affect the antibacterial chemicals present on the fabric surface.

Notes on using fabric masks

You should choose masks using knitted fabric or woven fabric with 2 layers (with 1 antibacterial layer) to ensure the prevention of viruses and bacteria entering the body.

When removing the mask, you hold the strap to remove it, do not touch the outer surface of the mask with your hands because viruses and bacteria may still remain on it.

You need to wash your hands with soap, diluted alcohol solution or dry hand sanitizer after removing the mask.
