Where is Guam?

Guam, an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, has long been famous for being blessed with the most precious gifts of heaven and sea. With friendly people and diverse culture, Guam becomes a destination not to be missed.

Guam was created by volcanic eruptions that took place between 55 million years and 34 million years ago. Thousands of generations of corals live and die on the cooled lava, their skeletons gradually becoming the limestone that underlies the island. The first inhabitants of the island were migrants from the Philippines around 1400 BC. Their descendants are collectively known as the Chamoru (or Chamorro).

Europeans only knew of Guam's existence after the famous explorer Ferdinand Magellan passed through the island on a voyage around the world. Guam became a Spanish colony and then fell into American hands. Currently, Guam is one of 19 overseas territories of the United States.

Guam has been welcoming people from all over the world to migrate here. Each immigrant brings a piece of their homeland that contributes to the common culture of Guam. On the contrary, the people on the island are very conscious of preserving the indigenous culture of the Chamorro people.

Visitors to the localities on both ends of Guam such as Yona, Yigo, and Utamac can experience for themselves the old way of life that seemed to exist only on the page of a book. Particularly, Inarajan's Gef Pa'go Cultural Village located in Gef Pago Park was created to preserve traditional crafts and other traditional cultural features. Visitors to the cultural village will be able to participate in activities such as knitting, building bamboo and rattan huts, learning to make coconut candy, coconut oil...

The US government divides Guam into 19 districts, but calls each district a "village", so many "villages" such as Dededo or Agat have the same population size as a small city. The city is concentrated in the central part of the island. The first destination for tourists should be the capital Hagatna. Spanish culture and American culture blend to give Hagatna a unique face with old towns and cities. Colonial-style houses Some must-see attractions include the Arts and Humanities Council's gallery and World War II-era fortresses.

What is an interesting experience in Guam?

Not far from the city of Hagatna is the village of Chamorro - a center of the traditional culture of indigenous people. Visitors can buy brocade products, bamboo and rattan products, pottery... made by local artisans. Every Wednesday night in Chamorro, there is also a night market that attracts a large number of people from near and far as well as tourists. But if you are a fan of modern things, please visit the Agana Heights district, which borders to the south of Hagatna.

Most of the rich people on the island live on the hills here to see Hagatna Bay every day. Shops selling luxury goods are also concentrated here. A note for customers when buying goods in Guam is that businesses and shops on the island have a tax-free preferential sales policy for the US and Japanese nationals. Conversely, visitors from other countries will incur higher-than-average prices.

In addition to Hagatna Bay, Tumon Bay is also a great place for visitors to enjoy summer days at sea. The entire bay is part of the Tumon Marine Nature Reserve. The government of Guam has gone to great lengths to preserve the reef surrounding the lagoon, making Tumon Bay a top spot for snorkelers. Tamuning "village" located next to Tumon Bay is the tourist center of the whole island, with 5-star quality resorts.

On the island, many companies let tourists rent canoes and small boats. Anyone can rent a boat and spend a long day fishing in the distance or watching schools of migrating whales. On the other hand, many people rent boats to be able to play sports such as windsurfing, kitesurfing, water biking...

The Pacific War History Park, located in Asan, still preserves almost intact tropical forests. Hard to imagine that this place used to be one of the fierce battlefields of World War II. Today, you can visit the preserved war ruins located at the edges of the forests.

Cape Ritidian is the northernmost point of Guam. The entire area is owned by the US Fish and Wildlife Service to preserve native animals from attack by invasive species. The trails through the reserve are suitable even for young people, so visitors can confidently bring the whole family to the Ritidian Cape. You will spend the whole day looking at the unique flora and fauna, enjoying the tranquility in the vastness of nature.

5 outstanding things about Guam

Only a few hours flight from North Korea

Guam, an overseas territory of the United States, is more than 5,000 km west of Hawaii, more than 2,000 km east of the Philippines and Japan, and to the south, only a 4-hour flight from Pyongyang, meaning Guam is a territory belonging to the Philippines. America is closest to North Korea. Guam is nearly 12,000 km from the US mainland, 19 hours by flight from New York City, and is the furthest overseas territory of the US. Any US citizen can visit Guam without a passport.

The people of Guam do not have the right to elect a president

Since World War II, everyone living on the island of Guam has been recognized as an American citizen but has not had the right to vote for the president or choose members of Congress. Currently, Democratic congressman Madeleine Z. Bordallo is Guam's sole representative in the legislature and he has no say in the legislative process.

After the "war of words" between President Trump and the North Korean leader, Guam is known more than the nickname "tourist paradise" for a long time.

After President Donald Trump threatened to unleash "fire and fury" on North Korea, Pyongyang immediately responded that "it is considering a plan to attack" the US overseas territory located in the Western Pacific, " Guam" suddenly became a popular search term on Google.

America's 'Eternal Aircraft Carrier'

With a quarter of the island owned by the US military, Guam is home to many important military bases. About 10 percent of Guam's 160,000-strong population is related to the military, many of whom are relatives of the more than 6,000 U.S. troops stationed on the island. In addition to Andersen Air Force Base, the island's naval base is home to nuclear submarines and the garrison of the US Coast Guard.

Once hailed by the US Secretary of Defense under the Obama administration as "an important strategic headquarters for the US military in the Western Pacific", Guam is protected by a missile defense system. Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD), similar to the one the US wants to deploy in South Korea.

Once a colony of Spain

Though only the size of the city of Chicago, Guam has had a history full of ups and downs. In 1521, explorer Ferdinand Magellan set foot on Guam, marking 300 years of Spanish rule on the island. After the Spanish-American war, Guam came under American control. During World War II, the Japanese army occupied Guam for about 31 months. In July 1944, the US returned and fought the Battle of Guam, retaking the island from the Japanese. Since then, Guam has been viewed as an organized but unincorporated territory of the United States.

Duty-free shopping paradise

After only about 4 hours of flight, tourists from Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan have set foot on the tropical island known as the duty-free paradise of goods. Many commercial centers on the island are open 24/7, enabling visitors to enjoy shopping for high-end fashion brands at prices 20% lower than those of the same brand sold in their home country.
