Prepare Materials to make Mickey Mouse Tie Dye Shirts

    • 1 t-shirt per person (100% cotton)
    • bag of rubber bands
    • waxed plain dental floss & needle
    • tie dye mix
    • Soda Ash (found with tie dye supplies)
    • plastic wrap
    • squirt bottles (most dye kits come with these already)

Make Mickey Mouse Tie Dye Shirts in 16 Steps

    Step 1

Use the Mickey head pattern and trace it using a pencil on the shirt.

    Step 2

To outline your traced Mickey head, employ a basting stitch with dental floss. A basting stitch involves a simple up-down-up-down motion, making it incredibly easy to execute. Ensure you leave approximately 4 inches of string loose at the beginning, as you'll need to draw the two ends together for the subsequent step.

    Step 3

Tighten the strings to create a puckered effect around Mickey's outline, then securely knot the dental floss.

    Step 4

Use rubber bands to tie the area below the Mickey head tightly. You need to tie the rubber bands to make about an inch-long border.

    Step 5

Submerge the shirt in Soda Ash solution for 20 minutes, then take it out and wring it to remove excess liquid.

    Step 6

Put the shirt flat on a table. Make sure to keep the Mickey head pointing up.

    Step 7

With your puckered Mickey head, grip around the area where the rubber bands are and begin twisting. Continue twisting until you achieve a "danish" roll shape. Don't worry if it's not perfect or if some parts stick out; simply tuck them in as needed.

    Step 8

Divide your t-shirt danish into pie sections using four rubber bands. When it comes time to dye, you'll alternate colors within these sections for a vibrant and dynamic result.

    Step 9

Pull Mickey's head up through the rubber bands in the center so that his head is protruding above the danish shape.

    Step 10

Lean your shirt over a sink, so that Mickey’s head isn’t touching any other part of the shirt.

    Step 11

Completely saturate Mickey's head until it's dripping with dye, then cover that section with plastic wrap. While some dye may accidentally spread onto the shirt, make an effort to prevent Mickey's head color from mixing with the rest of the shirt.

    Step 12

Dye the remaining sections of your shirt. Utilize two or three complementary colors, dyeing alternating sections of your "danish pie."

    TIE DYE TIP:
Ensure your shirt is thoroughly saturated with dye—dripping with color. Use more dye than you think necessary. Aim to bury the nozzle of your squirt bottle into the creases and give a generous squeeze. If you don't use enough dye, you risk having significant areas of white on your shirt, resulting in a less impactful tie-dye pattern. Initially, you may doubt the amount of dye needed, but trust me—be heavy-handed with the dye for vibrant results.

    Step 13

Wrap the entire saturated shirt in plastic wrap and allow it to sit overnight. This will allow the colors to penetrate and set, ensuring vibrant and long-lasting results. Enjoy your colorful hand after doing this.

    Step 14

Carefully unwrap your shirt bundle and remove all the rubber bands. Rinse the shirt in cold water until no more dye runs out. Be patient, as this may take some time.

    Step 15

Snip the dental floss and gently pull it out of the shirt.

    Step 16

Place the shirt in the washing machine and run it through a cold cycle.

Tips for making Mickey Mouse Tie Dye Shirt

Here are some key tips to consider before you begin:

    • Opt for t-shirts made of 100% cotton. Synthetic blends may not retain color as effectively.
    • Even if your chosen dye brand doesn't specify, include the Soda Ash step outlined below. It aids in setting the colors.
    • You don't need to splurge on expensive dye brands. There's a wide range of dye options available online. We've had success with Tulip brand dye, readily available at stores like Hobby Lobby.
    • Disregard the number of shirts stated on the dye packet. You'll likely need more dye for this project. For instance, if using two colors for your swirls, one bottle of each dye can dye approximately two adult shirts or 3-4 children's shirts. However, only one bottle of dye is needed for Mickey's head, as it's a small portion of the shirt.
    • Experiment with different colored shirts beyond white. For example, a baby blue t-shirt can yield stunning results with royal blue dye and a dark red Mickey head, creating a rich shade of purple.
    • Purchase slightly more dye than you think you'll require. Running out mid-project can be frustrating.
    • When selecting your color palette, consider the color wheel. Mixing certain colors can result in muddy shades. Stick to combinations that blend well, such as yellow and red, blue and red, or yellow and blue. Avoid using black dye, as it tends to produce a weaker black color.

By keeping these tips in mind, you'll be well-prepared to embark on your tie-dye Mickey Mouse shirt adventure!
