What is International Tea Day?

According to the United Nations, International Tea Day is honored annually on May 21. The resolution in question was approved on December 21, 2019, and the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is leading the Day's commemoration.

International Tea Day strives to increase global awareness of tea's long history and profound cultural and economic significance. The day's objective is to encourage and nurture collective action in support of initiatives that promote sustainable tea production and consumption, as well as to increase awareness about

History of International Tea Day

International Tea Day was founded in 2005 by labor unions, small tea growers, and civil society organizations in Asia and Africa to raise awareness about the need for livable wages for workers and fair prices for small tea producers.

The International Tea Conference in New Delhi adopted an International Declaration on Workers' and Small Growers' Rights to aid in the control of unfair competition, land ownership, safety rules, women's rights, social security, and livable wages. Another group, The Tea Board of India, suggested International Tea Day to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in the hope that it would become an official holiday.

Chairman Santosh Kumar Sarangi suggested this in 2015. According to the chairman, nations such as Canada, the United States, the European Union, Sri Lanka, China, Japan, Kenya, and Malawi backed India's proposal. While the holiday does not have official recognition, its purpose is to raise awareness of the perilous circumstances that tea producers in India face due to existing living conditions and labor restrictions.

Additionally, the day is dedicated to discussing pressing concerns such as waste, climate change, technology, and developments in tea production and consumption. To commemorate this day, around 150 representatives from tea groups assemble and hold a conference to examine the pervasive difficulties facing the tea business, as well as domestic issues.

How to Celebrate International Tea Day?

If you're a tea connoisseur, conduct some research on some of your favorite tea firms. Consider researching tea brands that support fair trade and maybe switching to them to make a difference in the way you purchase things like tea. If you're interested, use the hashtag #internationalteaday to help establish it as an official holiday and to educate people about the tea business.

You may also use International Tea Day to introduce yourself to a new type of tea. Matcha, for example, has been quite popular in recent years.
