When is Mickey Mouse Birthday?
Mickey Mouse Birthday is celebrated on November 18th to honor the birth of a beloved mouse who was originally a rabbit named Oswald. His character had his cinematic debut on November 18, 1928, but the narrative begins in 1927 when Walt Disney drew a floppy-eared rabbit while working for Universal Studios. The circumstances that transpired resulted in the birth of Mickey Mouse.
What is Mickey Mouse Birthday History?
While his creator and studio have given the adorable mouse numerous various birth dates throughout the years, November 18, 1928, was finally settled as Mickey's birth date upon his success. Prior to it, Mickey Mouse was subjected to the roller coaster events surrounding Oswald's success and Universal's botched contract talks. The Disney Bros. Studio withdrew from both the studio and Oswald and began work on developing a figure who would eventually lead the firm into the future.
From Oswald the rabbit to Mortimer the mouse, the squeaky-voiced rodent was finally called Mickey. He failed miserably in two animated short films. Then, on November 18, 1928, Mickey became a celebrity. Steamboat Willie, the first cartoon to be synced to music and sound effects, premiered in New York.
Mickey Mouse Club
A Mickey Mouse Club opened in Salem, Oregon, less than a year later. Admission to this specific club was free as a fundraiser for the Salvation Army. Patrons paid entry with a potato or a little toy and a cent. According to December 22, 1929, Statesman Journal (Salem, Oregon) story, excited new members gathered $12 and three truckloads of potatoes and toys.
Bear in mind that the stock market plummeted barely 20 days before the birth of Mickey Mouse. It's unsurprising that a charming little mouse could bring smiles to children's faces during such a trying period.
New members generally joined the club by completing an entry form received from a local shopkeeper and attending meetings conducted during matinees at neighborhood movie theatres. Admission was sometimes discounted in exchange for good actions and report cards. By the end of 1930, Mickey Mouse Clubs had expanded throughout the United States.
New Look & Companions
In 1935, animator Fred Moore gave Mickey a new face, enabling the animation to move more fluidly.
In 1935, animator Fred Moore created Mickey the face he is known for today. The large eyes, white gloves, and dainty little nose. More beloved than ever, he cemented his place in the hearts of youngsters everywhere.
Minnie, Donald, Goofy, and Pluto accompanied him on his journey, bringing vaudevillian humor with them.
Interesting facts about the world's most popular mouse
Mickey Mouse had his debut on Nov. 18, 1928, at the Colony Theater in New York City in the animated short "Steamboat Willie." Minnie Mouse made her public debut in that picture as well. Minnie and Mickey had previously starred in "Plane Crazy," a short film produced in conjunction with "Steamboat Willie."
Steamboat Willie was the world's first animated film to have synchronized sound, with Walt Disney providing the voice for Mickey's squeaks.
A Mickey Mouse animation may have over 10,000 drawings and take between six months and two years to finish.
During the 1930s, over 100 Mickey Mouse cartoons were made and screened in theatres alongside feature films, newsreels, serial dramas, and comedies. Disney's cartoons were so popular that spectators frequently inquired before purchasing a ticket if the performance would include a Mickey animation, according to Robert Tieman, author of "The Mickey Mouse Treasures."
On March 12, 1931, in Los Angeles, Mickey Mouse made his first live, in-person appearance in a live stage production titled the "Mickey Mouse Idea."
The classic Mickey Mouse watch was arguably the most popular item of Mickey merchandising. Mickey Watches were introduced in June 1933 and sold over 2.5 million units in the first two years of manufacture. A Mickey Watch was also placed in the time capsule at the New York World's Fair in 1939.
In 1935, Mickey made his debut appearance in a color picture, The Band Concert.

While you may recognize some of Mickey's acquaintances, such as Donald and Goofy, he also has a sizable family! Mickey has over a dozen cousins, uncles, and grandparents, including Uncle Maxwell, a college professor, Cousin Digger, an Australian rancher, and Uncle Louie, a French chef.
Mickey Mouse was awarded a position in the Smithsonian Institution on the occasion of his 60th birthday. Walt Disney Studios donated six original Steamboat Willie animation designs to the National Museum of American History in 1988.
Walt Disney has stated that one of the inspirations for the character of Mickey Mouse was silent cinema actor Charlie Chaplin. "We needed something attractive, and we thought of a small bit of a mouse with a hint of Chaplin's wistfulness...a little person doing the best he could," Disney explained in The Mickey Mouse Treasures, according to Tieman. "People embraced him as a symbolic figure, and despite his appearance as a mouse, he was seen as dashing and courageous," Ub Iwerks, the artist who assisted Disney in creating Mickey, said of the character.
