How is the history of National Happy Hour Day?

Surprisingly, something that most of us identify with recreational activities after work in predominantly urban environments began with the US Navy in 1914. (However, "Happy Hour" social clubs existed in 1900.)

Happy Hours, as they are currently known, began during the early stages of the Mexican-American War. During the capture of Veracruz Harbor, American sailors aboard the USS Arkansas were the topic of frantic reporters seeking filler material after the excitement of earlier battle had worn off. Notices such as this one in the "Washington Times" on May 1, 1914, "'The Happy Hour' Aboard Ship Makes United States Tars (short for "tar heels," a slang term for North Carolina sailors) Content." were prevalent. After a long day, joyful hours with boxing fights, dancing, and drinking improved morale. (Despite the fact that sailors were specifically prohibited from bringing liquor on military warships beginning in 1899, sailors may have snuck wine onboard.)

By the conclusion of WWII, happy hours had established themselves as a "thing." The relaxing habit has spread across the naval forces of the United States. However, on April 25, 1959, a story in the "Saturday Evening Post" popularised "happy hour" for everyone except Navy personnel. According to "Bustle," an article titled "The Men Who Chase Missiles" detailed the dangers faced by those who "lived and worked on remote island outposts watching Cape Canaveral's missile launches... "With the exception of those who overspend during "happy hour" at the bar — and there are few of these — the money accumulates quickly."

As much as we like National Happy Hour Day (and we do! ), the holiday goes unnoticed. This may be one of those internet-generated days that adds an extra dimension of enjoyment to life. So, at the end of the day, how about we meet at a pub after work, about 6 p.m.?

Activities for National Happy Hour Day

Inviting your pals to your house for drinks

Technically, you cannot take advantage of half-off drinks if you are hosting your own party, but drinking at home is cheaper, so you still win. Additionally, you won't need to worry about how you're going to get home. While the environment may not be as "cool" as your favorite watering spot, you may liven things up by experimenting with new recipes and customizing your go-to.

Carry on grubbin'

Happy hour is about more than simply drinking. Numerous pubs and restaurants also offer meal specials. If you're the designated driver (or simply prefer food over a drink), Happy Hour is a great value!

Attend a bar where everyone knows your name.

While guests are unlikely to yell out your name as they did for Norm in "Cheers," on National Happy Hour Day, there may be additional special discounts for bar or restaurant "regulars." You cannot deny a sense of camaraderie while throwing darts or participating in bar games with people you know. However, do not limit yourself to the tried and true. Take a risk and visit a location you've been dying to see, or plan a little bar crawl for the evening.
