What Is National Horse Day?

Every December 13, National Horse Day is observed. It is a day to commemorate the economic, historical, and cultural achievements provided by horses. On December 13, horse aficionados around the country will gather to demonstrate their gratitude for these wonderful beasts. Whether you're an experienced rider or have never ridden a horse before, here are several ways to commemorate the day!

History Of National Horse Day

Since 2004, when Congress proclaimed December 13 as National Horse Day, Americans have used the day to commemorate and appreciate the horse's importance in not just shaping our country but also in its present position in the modern period.

Horses contribute around $9.2 billion to the US economy in general. Whether they assist in plowing fields, transporting food and supplies into rural regions, relocating cattle on ranches, or simply providing gentle, thoughtful equine therapy, horses have been ingrained in the fabric of life in America.

After the primordial Native American horses died out between 13,000 and 11,000 years ago, European colonists introduced the modern wild horse species to America in the late 1400s. They have since thrived in the vast plains and mountains west, where thunderous hooves of untamed herds may still be heard to this day. Rodeos remain a lively and beloved element of the American west's culture, and horses are still required for employment in many harsh and rural places.

While the history of horse day is relatively new to the Millenium, horses have always been an integral part of many Americans' lives.
