What is the New York City Marathon?

The New York City Marathon (now branded as the TCS New York City Marathon after its main sponsor) is an annual marathon (42,195 km or 26,219 miles) that runs through the five boroughs of New York City. It is the largest marathon in the United States, with 53,5627 finishing in 2019 and 98,247 registrants for the 2017 race.

The first New York City Marathon was held 51 years ago on September 13, 1970, organized by New York Road Runners presidents Fred Lebow and Vincent Chiappetta, with 127 competitors running multiple laps around the Park. Drive of Central Park. Only about 100 spectators watched Gary Muhrcke win the race at 2:31:38. In fact, only a total of 55 athletes crossed the finish line.

Over the years, the marathon got bigger and bigger. To celebrate America's biennial in 1976, city auditor George Spitz proposed that the race goes through all five counties. With the support of the President of the District of Manhattan, Percy Sutton and others convinced Mayor Abraham Beame and eventually race director Fred Lebow. The race was a great success, and what was intended to be a one-off celebration, became an annual race.

Founded in 1970 and is currently considered the largest-scale marathon in the world. In 2013, there were about 51,999 participants and 51,394 people who completed the exam. The race was conducted around all boroughs of New York City.
