What country is Haiti?

Haiti is a country in the Caribbean Sea in the region of Latin America. The country has many rugged mountains interspersed with small coastal plains and valleys along rivers. Diverse terrain, excellent climate are advantages for this country.

Although the total area is only 27,750 km², the 3 sides bordering the sea have created for Haiti an extremely convenient trade position.

Back in time, on a misty morning on October 12, 1492, on a journey to find India by sea, navigator Christopher Columbus discovered America, an unknown land. His trip was sponsored by Queen Isabella I of Spain and it became a one-of-a-kind trip in history. Columbus was entrusted with the command of three expedition ships named Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria, with a crew of 88. On August 3, 1492, Columbus led an expedition that left the Spanish port to head west to India and China. However, after being at sea for many days without seeing land, everyone was very depressed and decided to return to Spain. But then on the morning of October 12, 1492, a sailor on the Pinta ship named Rodrigo de Triana saw the mainland hidden behind a strip of fog. At first, people thought it was India, but it wasn't, it was Cuba and Haiti.

Haiti and The huge debt

The Caribbean nation became the world's first black-led Republic when it declared independence from France in early 1804. Saint-Domingue, once France's richest colony, is known as the "Pearl Antilles", renamed Haiti. It was once a coveted land with an abundance of sugar, coffee, and cotton.

In 1825, more than two decades after declaring independence, French King Charles X sent a warship to Port-au-Prince and forced Haiti to compensate for the loss of French property. Haiti could not pay the huge amount, forced to shoulder a debt for more than a century. Those payments are seen as a tremendous economic burden for any fledgling country. Haiti is not only a young country, it is also a republic founded and led by black people who stood up against slavery. Therefore, observers commented that the independence of Haiti is a threat to many other countries. This country has no choice but to comply with the demands of the French side.

By complying with the terms, Haiti was exempted from political and economic isolation - and a debt that would take 122 years to pay off. According to Forbes, the people of Haiti have been taught a patriotic song since they were students, the lyrics are profound, urging all Haitians to pay their own money to help the government. debt to France.

It was only in 1947 that the debt was fully paid off, thanks to the voluntary donations of Haitian residents, the majority of whom were desperate to the point of destitution. However, a century of debt settlement has allowed the Haitian government to remain strong in the face of financial pressure and an uncertain political environment.

Haiti's Crisis

Throughout the 19th century, Haiti continued to experience political and economic instability, with little investment in infrastructure and education.

In 1915, the United States invaded Haiti after the President of Haiti was assassinated.

The United States then explained that the move to Haiti was to restore order and prevent France and Germany from invading Haiti. The American occupation ended in 1934 but Washington's control over the finances of the poorest country in the Americas lasted until 1947.

After a series of coups, the Duvalier family ruled Haiti by force until the 1980s. Under their leadership, Haiti fell into deep debt. During the early 1990s, former Roman Catholic priest Jean-Bertrand Aristide was elected President of the Republic. Over the next 15 years, he was forced out of office twice more.

Haiti, with a population of 11 million people, is regarded to be the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, according to the United Nations.

In 2010, this place suffered a terrible earthquake, claiming the lives of about 300,000 people. The country has never really recovered from the earthquake, still trapped in the swamps of economic underdevelopment and insecurity. Another cholera outbreak in 2016 involving UN peacekeepers killed at least 10,000 people and infected 800,000.

Many areas devastated by the 2010 earthquake in Haiti have yet to be rebuilt, including the government headquarters, the National Palace. And there are still many concerns that many of the buildings that have been rebuilt will be strong enough to protect people in the next earthquake.

Struggling between both natural disasters and political turmoil over the past decade, many Haitians seem to have little ability to bounce back mentally and emotionally.

Over the years, the island nation has also suffered from storms, floods, and droughts. But besides natural disasters, Haiti has also experienced an outbreak of cholera, and government corruption has also caused unrest here.

The country is currently gripped by soaring inflation, while fuel shortages slow the gears of industry and government. Therefore, hunger is now a major threat to Haiti. 40% of Haitians will face food insecurity this March, with that, 1 in 10 people will experience food insecurity at an urgent level.

According to the Al Jeeza news agency, currently, about 60% of the population earns less than 2 USD/day. The health crisis caused by Covid-19 has also put the country under additional pressure. And the most recent unrest is the event on 7/7/2021, President Jovenel Moïse, who has led the country since 2017, was assassinated at his home.

Haiti is slowly recovering

While thousands of Haitians were waiting for relief goods or leaving their old homes to go to areas not affected by the earthquake, in the capital, Port-au-Prince, where heavy damage in the earthquake occurred. On January 12, banks and supermarkets began to reopen. Life is gradually reviving, although the ruins cannot be erased immediately.

In the capital Port-au-Prince, the center of the earthquake disaster, life is showing signs of revival as shops open and banks begin to operate, people can use cards to buy goods. chemical. On the streets, buses and other means of transport have also begun to bustle again. A few supermarkets have opened, people can buy essential necessities.

The Haitian government has pledged that nearly half a million people living in temporary shelters will be provided with food, medicine, and other necessities for life. Yesterday, the United Nations said the Haitian government had ended the search and rescue phase of the earthquake to shift its focus to helping those who were left homeless.

After the earthquake disaster, it took the island nation of Haiti months or years to restore life to the way it was before. But the Haitian people hope, with the efforts of each person, the government, and the international community, a beautiful island nation will revive.
