What is racism?

Racism is the belief that groups of people possess different behavioral traits that correspond to physical appearance and can be divided on the basis of the superiority of one race over another. It can also mean prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed at others because they are of another race or ethnicity. Modern variations of racism are often based on social perceptions of biological differences between peoples. These views may take the form of social actions, practices or beliefs, or political systems in which different races are ranked as superior or inferior to each other, based on characteristics, abilities, or generally recognized qualities.

In terms of political systems (for example, racism) that support the expression of prejudice or aversion in the act of discrimination or the law, ideological racism may include concerned with social aspects such as nativism, xenophobia, discrimination, racial segregation, hierarchies, and egalitarianism.

While race and ethnicity are regarded as distinct categories in current social science, the two terms have a long history of being synonymous in popular usage and earlier social science literature. . "Ethnicity" is often used in a sense closer to a "tradition" by tradition: the division of groups of people based on qualities deemed essential or innate to the group. Thus, racism and racism are often used to describe discrimination based on ethnicity or culture, regardless of whether these differences are described as racist. According to a United Nations convention on racial discrimination, there is no distinction between the terms "racism" and "ethnicity". The United Nations Convention further concludes that superiority based on racial discrimination is scientifically wrong, morally reprehensible, socially unjust, and dangerous.  Additionally, the Convention declares that there is no basis for racial discrimination, either theoretically or practically. On March 7, 1966, the International Convention for the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination was signed to swiftly eradicate racial discrimination in all of its manifestations. On January 4, 1969, the Convention went into force.

Causes of racism

What is the cause of the 'racist' mentality? It is a remarkable phenomenon that when a group of people is scorned, they run the risk of increasing racism towards lower groups, as a way of elevating themselves to relieve resentment. . But in general, it can be said that the main reason why people easily despise other people or ethnic groups is that they think they are smarter, more talented, their nation is more advanced and civilized.

But are there really intelligent people superior to those of low intelligence? Perhaps technological advancements have blinded people, and past misinterpretations of evolutionary theory and genetics have caused a common sense that which peoples are primitive in terms of nature. science and technology are the people with genetic inferiority in intelligence. If we look back at human history far enough and wide enough, even before the appearance of writing (about 5,000 years ago), we would certainly have a different opinion. As noted researcher Jared Diamond has pointed out, there is no evidence that there is a difference in intellectual ability at the biological level between the peoples of the world. In other words, basically, no nation is smarter than another. The difference in scientific and technological progress comes not from racial genetics, but natural conditions and historical processes, as Jared Diamond rightly observed in Guns, Germs, and Steel: “The cause lies in geographical and biogeographical contingencies, namely the difference between the two continents [Europe and Africa] in terms of area, major axis, types of wild plants and wild animals there … The historical course of each people is different, because of differences between the living environments of the peoples, not because of biological differences between the peoples themselves.

What is civilization, what is progress? The standard of civilization - progress is set by the people, the countries with military strength and science and technology develop themselves. Therefore, the basic measure of this kind of civilization is the scientific and technological advances of a group of people, which entails the social structure and legal system to operate, and what is integrated with it. which we can collectively call 'culture'. Surely that system built up over many centuries has many merits worthy of being called civilization. But are values other than that not called civilization? After all, the measure of a man's true civilization and wisdom must be expressed in 'quality of life', through basic factors: understanding and harmony with nature, good relationship with others, developing freedom and goodwill (or the spiritual life in general). On this basis, do we have anything better to compare with technologically primitive peoples, with groups of people whose lives are still 'hunter-gatherers'?

The reality of racism against Asians in the US during the Covid pandemic

In a statement on March 19, President Biden said: The Covid-19 Pandemic Hate Crimes Act, when passed, will help accelerate the federal government's response to the rise of hate crime. hatred became more and more serious when the Covid-19 pandemic occurred; assist state and local governments to improve hate crime reporting and ensure that hate crime information is more accessible to Asian American communities.

Mr. Biden's call comes in the context of cases of racism and hatred constantly increasing in the US in the past time, especially since the outbreak of the Covid-19 epidemic, which has claimed many jobs for workers. . Data released by the US Department of Labor on March 18 shows that a year after the outbreak of the pandemic, the number of new applications for unemployment benefits in the country is still high, despite the vaccination campaign being promoted alongside the pandemic. a series of new bailout packages to stimulate the economy. Specifically, there were 770,000 new applications for unemployment benefits in the week ending March 13, up 45,000 from the previous week. This is also the 52nd consecutive week of increases, higher than the peak recorded during the global financial crisis in 2008-2010. Many white Americans have blamed immigrants for taking their jobs, which has led to a recent surge in anti-immigrant sentiment.

In addition, the chaos, fear, and anxiety of the people before the pandemic also create fertile ground for far-right and ethnic-discriminatory groups to promote violent and extremist trends. Along with "conspiracy theories" against Asians on social networks, extreme actions such as defaming, beating, attacking Asians, boycotting Asian businesses... inferior to the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the US and many Western countries. The above content of racism and racial hatred spreads, leading to serious consequences. At the end of January 2021, an 84-year-old man of Thai origin was pushed to his death in San Francisco (California state), while another 91-year-old man was also brutally pushed down in a Chinatown area. (Chinese Quarter) in Oakland. Most recently, on March 16, shootings at three spa stores in Atlanta, the southeastern United States, claimed the lives of eight people, including six Asian women. The suspect, Robert Aaron Long, 21, of Woodstock, was arrested by authorities and charged with murder, as well as several other assaults.

According to NBC News, Asian Americans have been the target of racist, hostile, and abusive assaults connected to the illness, which has killed 2.63 million people globally, including more than 500,000 in the United States.

Stop Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI), a leading aggregator of cases against Asian Americans during the Covid-19 pandemic, recently released a report saying, from March 19 From 2020 to February 28, 2021, this center has received a total of 3,795 cases of discrimination against Asians across the United States. Forms of discrimination include humiliation, avoidance, physical assault, online harassment to civil rights violations.

Discrimination against black people in the world

Black Lives Matter has emerged as a global phenomenon and university students around the world – often a significant force in youth movements – are on the frontline. In the United States and around the world, students oppose universities that have honored their sponsors and prominent historical figures with ties to slavery and colonialism, seeing it as a complicit in racism – as well as to oppose any racist policy.

Calls for the removal of Confederate monuments and names on campuses in the United States sparked movements such as calls to remove references to Cecil Rhodes from institutions. higher education institutions in South Africa and the UK as well as throughout the Commonwealth of Nations. In Latin America, the legacy of colonialism and racism are intertwined. Throughout the region, racial classifications emerged during the Spanish colonization based on the racial composition of each person, the ratio of Hispanic-European mix, the native or the slave ancestry. rate of African descent — and of course this system of classification is also reflected in the smaller area of higher education. It is not surprising that black or predominantly black groups are at the bottom of the social pyramid. Although this system was abolished as independence movements took hold in the region, the social structure deeply rooted in this perception remains influential. The Black Lives Matter movement in the area also raises concerns about the role of renowned colonialists — such as Columbus and Pizarro — are frequently remembered publicly, particularly in environmental education.

Brazil provides an important example where the Black Lives Matter/Vidas Negras Importam movement has resonated deeply. The country was colonized by the Portuguese, who happened to be among the first European powers to settle in West Africa and played a key role in the transatlantic slave trade. It was the last country in the Americas to abolish slavery. The controversial public university admissions quota system shows that addressing the legacy of racism is a complex undertaking.

Unfortunately, the stigma against black people is still widespread today. Amid the spread of COVID-19 in China, misinformation that black migrant workers spread the disease has led to businesses and restaurants introducing bans on black people. There are also reports of discrimination against black students from Africa on Chinese university campuses. Similar examples of discrimination against Africans occur in India.
