On Thanksgiving, what will you be thankful for? Thanksgiving is a time for good food, friends, and family. It's also a time to stop, think about our lives, and remember what we're grateful for. With how busy our lives are, it can be hard to stop and be grateful for what we have. Here is a list of things to be thankful for this Thanksgiving if you are looking for ways to feel grateful this week.
When Is Thanksgiving 2022?
The Thanksgiving holiday in the United States started in the 1500s, became a myth in 1621, and was still celebrated even during the worst parts of the Civil War. It is now one of the most anticipated and loved days in the country. On Thursday, November 24, 2022, people will celebrate Thanksgiving. It always happens on the fourth Thursday of November, as has always been the case.
Is The Date Always The Same?
Nope! Every year, the date of Thanksgiving changes based on when the fourth Thursday falls. Even though we don't know exactly what day of the week the first Thanksgiving was, it has always been in November.
George Washington made November 26, 1789, the "Day of Publick Thanksgiving."
Since then, the holiday has always been on a Thursday. Abraham Lincoln made the last Thursday in November the official day of Thanksgiving in 1863. However, a few decades later, Franklin D. Roosevelt changed it to the second-to-last Thursday because he was worried that a later holiday would cut into the Christmas shopping season. Congress finally stepped in to clear up the confusion. On December 26, 1941, Roosevelt signed a resolution making the fourth Thursday in November the Federal Thanksgiving Day holiday.
What Is Thanksgiving's History?
As you may know from elementary school, the pilgrims created the Thanksgiving holiday. Native Americans honoring the harvest via dance and ceremonies predate the settlers who celebrate this day. The year 1621 is popularly linked with Thanksgiving. However, The Washington Post notes that historians think immigrants in the Americas held a Thanksgiving feast as early as 1565. Prior to the Plymouth pilgrims' celebration in 1621, it is thought that other colonies also celebrated "Thanksgiving" with feasts and religious rituals.
After such a long and terrible winter the previous year, the Pilgrims were immensely appreciative to finally have a grain crop. Governor William Bradford organized the feast, and they invited their Wampanoag allies as their guests. It is believed that many of the meals, including a variety of poultry, fish, and newly-harvested vegetables, originated from Native American cuisine. According to rumors, beer was even offered during the first Thanksgiving.
What Do We Give Thanks For Today?
Over time, the pilgrims' simple celebration grew into a national holiday. In 1917, New York was the first state to make Thanksgiving a legal holiday. Since then, more and more states have done the same. Thanksgiving has a religious history, and many people still think of it as a religious holiday. However, most people see it as a time to spend with family and friends and eat foods that are loosely based on the first Thanksgiving meal, with a focus on turkey, stuffing, and cranberries.
Things to Feel Thankful for This Thanksgiving
Feeling of security
A lot of people around the world and even in the United States do not feel safe this Thanksgiving. Think about how lucky you are not to have to live in fear this holiday season if you feel safe where you live, how you spend your time in the community, and with whom you spend time.
A healthy body
One of the most important things to be aware of and take care of in our lives is our health. If we don't have good health, we can't do much else. Take a moment to be thankful for your good health if you wake up this week with air in your lungs, medicine on the shelf, and no pain in your body.
Family of Faith
Many of us would not be where we are today without our families. Whether you're single and live far away from your closest relative, or you're married and have a house full of kids, this is the time of year to be thankful for your family and remember how they made you who you are.
Having close friends
Of course, many of us feel closer to our friends than to some of our relatives. Strong friendships help us get through both good and bad times, and they often change us for the better. This week is a good time to think about the friends who have made a difference in your life, and if you can, reach out to them and say thanks.
Maybe you're more of an "animal lover" than a "people person." Give thanks for all the love that your furry, scaly, slimy, or feathered friends bring to your life this Thanksgiving.
Work to Do
We know that jobs can sometimes feel more like a burden than something to be grateful for. But many of us wouldn't be able to feed ourselves, buy a home, or take care of our families if we didn't have jobs. Many people who don't have jobs want to work, so if you do have a job this Thanksgiving, take a moment to be thankful.
A Place to Live
Lastly, if you have a place to live and a roof over your head this week, be thankful. People all over the world don't have a permanent place to live, so let the feeling of gratitude seep into your heart. Even better, think about who you could invite to your house for Thanksgiving this year.
As we go about our daily lives, we often get caught up in the things we want and forget about the little things we already have. Thanksgiving is a great time to sit down and think about all the good things in our lives. Start with this list and see how many more things you can add. Because of this, you'll not only have a great Thanksgiving, but you'll also feel better for weeks afterward.
