To begin with, let’s start with some information about this observance so that you can really get the hang of its meaning and the reasons why it should be celebrated.
What is Veterans Day?
Definition of Veterans Day
Annually, when November comes, American people celebrate Veterans Day or Armistice Day, which is known as a federal holiday in the United States taking place on November 11 to honor military veterans who have served in the United States Armed Forces.
Armistice Day and Remembrance Day are celebrated to mark the anniversary of the end of World War I which coincides with Veterans Day. However, major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. As a result, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day in 1954 at the urging of major U.S. veteran organizations.
Veterans Day is different from Memorial Day, a U.S. public holiday taking place in May because Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, whereas, Memorial Day honors those who had died while in military service.
History of Veterans Day
After President Calvin Coolidge had issued proclamations calling for the observance of November 11 with appropriate ceremonies due to the request of the United States Congress adopted a resolution on June 4, 1926, November 11 was acknowledged as a legal holiday: "a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as “Armistice Day”.
Raymond Weeks, a World War II from Birmingham, Alabama, was seen as the “ Father of Veterans Day”. In 1945, he had the idea to expand Armistice Day to celebrate all veterans, not just those who died in World War I which was supported by Gen. Dwight Eisenhower. Then, two years later, Weeks led the first national celebration in Alabama and annually until his death in 1985. Raymond Weeks was honored at the White House with the Presidential Citizenship Medal in 1982 by President Reagan.
Although it was celebrated in 1947, Veterans Day has officially been known since June 1, 1954, when Congress amended the bill to replace "Armistice" with "Veterans”. Simultaneously, the National Veterans Award was also created and Congressman Rees of Kansas was the person to receive the first National Veterans Award in Birmingham, Alabama, for his support in offering legislation to make Veterans Day a federal holiday.
The celebration of November 11 started in 1971, it then was moved to the fourth Monday of October in accordance with the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. It was not until 1978 that Veterans Day was moved back to its original celebration on November 11.

Why do we celebrate Veterans Day?
On the occasion of the first Armistice Day( today is Veterans Day) on November 11, 1919, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson delivered a speech to American countrymen to express what he felt the day meant to Americans. In his speech, he mentioned, “ To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service, and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of nations”.
In fact, Veterans Day should be observed because it gives Americans the opportunity to celebrate the bravery and sacrifice of all U.S. veterans. The day has both educating and human meanings for every citizen.
Veterans Day also contributes to the love of the nation and the gratitude toward those who help to protect and maintain the security and prosperity of the nation.
