When will World AIDS Day be celebrated?

World AIDS Day was originally commemorated on December 1, 1988, to raise awareness about HIV and to remember those who have died as a result of the disease. Today, it is recognized as the longest-running illness awareness campaign in public health history.

Since those formatitt5ttve years, the pandemic has evolved significantly, as has the global agenda. With around 38 million HIV-positive individuals globally, universal testing is critical for slowing the spread of new infections. Testing will identify all those who require treatment, allowing those living with HIV to enjoy longer and better lives.

However, with global donations stagnant and infection rates growing in a number of countries, notably Russia and South Africa, one could argue that there has never been a more critical time to commemorate World AIDS Day than today.

The Origins of World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day was originally planned to capitalize on a media vacuum that arose between the 1988 presidential elections in the United States and Christmas. After nearly a year of non-stop campaign coverage, James Bunn, a broadcast journalist who had recently assumed a position at the World Health Organization (WHO), was confident that viewers would be captivated by the narrative. He and his colleague, Thomas Netter, chose December 1 as the appropriate date and spent the following 16 months planning and executing the inaugural event.

The inaugural World AIDS Day focused on children and teens in order to raise awareness about the impact of AIDS on families, not only the stigmatized populations (including gay and bisexual men and injecting drug users).

From 1996, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) took over World AIDS Day activities, expanding the project's scope to include a year-round prevention and education campaign.

In 2004, the World AIDS Campaign was registered in the Netherlands as an autonomous, non-profit organization.

World AIDS Day commemorated its 30th anniversary in 2018 with the theme "Know Your Status," a call to action by the worldwide community to identify 90% of the world's HIV population by 2030.

What can you do to celebrate World AIDS Day?

World AIDS Day may be observed in a variety of ways. You can observe the day by conducting research on the effects of AIDS or by being more knowledgeable about how HIV affects communities. You may choose to educate yourself on harm reduction or find out how you can contribute to the end of HIV stigma. You may wish to pay tribute to individuals who have died by visiting AIDS monuments. Future-Oriented Prevention

In the future, our emphasis must stay on prevention. However, in order to prevent the transmission of HIV, we must continue to de-stigmatize the condition and raise awareness about the continuing threat that HIV infection poses. HIV has not been eradicated, and even if you do not feel you are in danger, the risk exists.

Fortunately, breakthroughs in PrEP drugs have kept us on track to eradicate this virus, but only if we all do our part.
