What is avocado?

Avocados are native to Mexico and Central America. Classified as flowering, dicotyledonous plants. Avocado tree about 20 meters high, leaves alternate, each leaf 12–25 cm long, flowers inconspicuous, green-yellow, each flower 5–10 mm large.

The avocado tree's fruit is similar to a gourd, measuring 7–20 cm in length and weighing between 100 g and 1 kilogram. Shell thin, slightly hard, dark green, sometimes almost black. When ripe, the inside of the meat is soft, light yellow, like butter, with a sweet taste. The avocado pit is egg-shaped, 5-6 cm long, centrally located, dark brown, and very hard.

Where does the name Avocado come from?

Avocados originally came from Mexico and Central America, where the native Nahua people found avocado trees 10,000 years ago. The avocado tree grows wild in the wild.

Its fruit was used by the Aztecs as a delicacy and as an aphrodisiac, which derives its name from the Nahuatl word "ahuacatl", meaning "testicles".

Scholars suggest that the Nahua people chose the name because the fruit has an evocative shape and is considered an aphrodisiac. Nahua scholars probably used the anatomical definition, according to Dr. Magnus Pharao Hansen. About 5,000 years ago, when the Spaniards conquered the continent, they renamed the fruit "aguacate," according to Today I Found Out. The United States imports the fruit, but they are a difficult commodity to sell because the name is difficult for Americans to call.
