What is Monkey?

Monkey is a term referring to most mammals of the infraorder Simiiformers which are also known as the simians.

There are two main families of monkeys including New World monkeys ( known as Platyrrhini) and Old World monkeys( known as Cercopithecidae in the strict sense or Catarrhini in the broad sense).

What are the benefits of Monkeys?

To science and research

While research in primates has remained controversial, it is believed that there is a strong case for monkeys’ use to advance scientific and medical knowledge, and in assessing the safety of new medicines. Providing that the use of primates, like other animals, should only be when there is no alternative, and should be subject to careful regulation.

The use of monkeys in research accounts for small numbers, around 0.1% of research animals, but they have been important in many important medical advances. Some typical examples are the polio vaccine, life support systems for premature babies, and deep brain stimulation for Parkinson’s Disease.

Also, monkeys are used in neuroscience to better understand the brain and treat conditions ranging from Alzheimer’s disease to schizophrenia.

Another area is reproduction, fertility, and development in the womb as well as safety testing new medicines and vaccines.

Moreover, monkeys are used in research about colon cancer.

To human's life

Monkeys can do a lot of daily tasks as a normal person such as retrieving dropped or out of reach objects, helping with a drink of water, turning pages, scratching itches, pushing buttons and switches for remotes, phones, computers, etc., and even repositioning limbs on a wheelchair.

Importantly, there is the incredible benefit of the human-animal bond between people and monkeys. Monkeys can be good friends who can listen but never judge.

In addition, monkeys also bring you laughter, surprise, … for their stubbornness and smartness.

The actual situation of monkeys

Monkeys are often considered pests by farmers or are killed for their fur and for meat. A large number of monkeys are hunted for medicinal concoctions. While research in monkeys brings a huge range of advances for people, not all monkeys used in research have been properly studied.

Nevertheless, hunting to supply the commercial trade is one of the major threats to monkeys. It is necessary to take mutual actions to give them safe habitats and protect these smart animals from being endangered.

For such enormous benefits and actual situations, monkeys are observed annually with the name “ Monkey Day”, which is a really practical and meaningful observance.

Monkey Day is an unofficial international holiday celebrated on December 14 every year which celebrates monkeys and “all things simian,” including other non-human primates such as apes, tarsiers, and lemurs.

Two artists Casey Sorrow and Eric Millikin created and popularized the day of Monkeys in 2000 with the aim of spreading awareness for the animals, showing love and caring for them.
